It is better for traditional media to remain silent and be thought as fools than to open their mouth and remove all doubt.




When did the traditional media turn into a junk content pusher? It used to be a moral compass, it used to empower its journalists. It used to be the outstanding citizen looking over the street and urge action when something detrimental to the community was going on. Nowadays, traditional media are nothing more drug pushers, doing everything they can to protect their corner, while the neighborhood is moving on (to independent bloggers, social media etc).  So don’t expect to find links to their websites in this post.

Here’s just a few examples that flooded the wires recently:

  • Coverage of Domestic Violence law progress turned into a who-got-a-point controversy by titles that makes it sound like an Obama victory over the opposing House. Rather than celebrate the common realization that violence has gone too far and this agreement is a step in the right direction.
  • The immediate shallow reaction to Sergey Brin’s TED talk when he mentioned the emasculating effect smartphones have was a tongue in cheek “And Google Glass doesn’t?”  It was a TED talk and that alone is a clear invitation to try to think at a higher level before reacting, although this might be a long-forgotten skill for some. Then it is Brin we’re talking about, a man who measures his words and shares with the public only that which he is truly passionate about, which also invites a deeper analysis. Besides, the comment just makes sense on its own, especially if someone double-checks the word “emasculate” with a dictionary in their hands. And yes, sitting around couches swiping phone screens reduces a man (or a woman) to someone who lives life vicariously through their gadget.  But this is only a real problem for traditional media, since they profit greatly from people addicted to spins on reality while mentally removing themselves from the very reality.
  • Trying to smear the finally emerging electric car industry by knowingly compromising and miss-reporting the Tesla Model S’s drive test.  That was simply abject.

And yes, today’s mainstream media also plagiarizes social media content — that way, they can shout stupidities without taking responsibility for it. Who cares about the regurgitation of  @some_user_in_the_twitter_sphere’s opinion?  Doing something stupid is not nearly as stupid as knowingly imitating someone else’s careless actions.

Turning everything in controversy just so to get people to comment on “articles” looks more like an act of desperation, than a way to be relevant. And many are addicted to junk news the same way they’re addicted to junk food. And while one kills the body, the other one kills the mind.

The traditional media is drowning, friends, and they are pushing their addiction-generation sensationalism while silencing the real journalists who somehow still work for them, handcuffed by some old inner ideals and the bills they also have to pay. These media empires are drowning, and refuse to swim to the shore and regroup.  Instead, they climb on the journalists who can still swim by truly understanding the streams of time, and force them into quantitative content that draws immediate ad revenue, one more breath of air.  Soon though, enough real journalists will move on and the fleets will sink. But then again, Turner & comp hedged that risk. It’s why they’re some of the largest land owners in the world.
